The “Back to the Future” video game is now available, with a version for the PlayStation expected in early for the PC and Mac in 2011. It is sharp, funny, and expertly designed, and it ranks among the best titles the studio has developed to date.

This game also has a cartoonish look unlike the contemporary 3-D presentation. The game begins in May of 1986, some seven months following Marty McFly’s temporal adventures. Doc Brown is presumably traveling through time and, as would be fit his absent-minded nature, owes a considerable amount to the bank, which has foreclosed on his property and is holding an estate sale. The sale is, to Marty’s dismay, being managed by his father, George. So, here players must figure out where in time Doc is, find him and help resolve the problem. The game requires exploration and interaction with objects and characters to complete each objective. If a player gets stuck, they can check out hints to guide them to the proper path.

The game features popular characters from the films, including Marty, Doc Brown, George McFly, and Biff Tannen. Marty will be voiced by actor AJ LoCascio, while Christopher Lloyd will reprise his role as Doc Brown for the video game. George and Biff will be voiced by actors Michael X. Sommers and Kid Beyond, respectively.

Interest in a Back to the Future video game came in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the first film. The commemorative Blu-ray collection was released in October. As part of the deal announced in June, Telltale got the rights from Universal to create games based on Back to the Future and Jurassic Park (still in the works). Telltale also donates $1 from each game purchase to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation.

Game maker Telltale Games is selling the game online for $24.95; it’s also available now on Steam for $22.49. The game includes five “Back to the Future” episodes, which will be released over the next several months.
