Korean electronics giant Samsung has sold 1 million Galaxy Tab tablet devices worldwide just two months after putting it on sale outside the U.S., and all four major wireless U.S. carriers starting sales in mid-November. This results show that the Android-based, 7-inch touchscreen of the Galaxy Tab is indeed popular as well.
The sales have picked up significantly since mid-November, when the Tab went on sale with all four national US carriers and many European operators – the tablet first went on sale in early October in selected Asian and European markets. However, the progress has been far slower than that of iPad, which hit the one million mark just one month after going on sale in April.
The Thanksgiving holiday likely helped spur sales in the U.S., although Samsung has not revealed sales figures for specific regions. A Samsung spokesperson confirmed that global sales had reached the 1 million sales. The company said it has shipped 3 million Galaxy S smartphones. The figure comprises sales of the seven models of Galaxy S smartphones, including the Fascinate, Captivate, and Vibrant, currently available from all the major carriers.
Samsung’s tablet runs on Android 2.2 and has a 1 GHz processor, a 7-inch multi-touch screen and dual cameras. As a portable machine for Web browsing, typing e-mails and using Web applications, the Galaxy Tab excels. The device was released in the U.S. market in mid-November, almost a month after its release in global markets.
At the same time, Samsung was shown to be the biggest mobile device manufacturer selling to U.S. buyers in the latest ComScore survey. Of 30,000 people surveyed, 24.2% said they are using a Samsung phone or other Samsung mobile device.
Sold in 3G versions, the Galaxy Tab is sold at $399.99 in the US market with a two-year service contract from major wireless providers or at $599.99 without it. As Christmas approaches it is expected that the consumer demand for the Galaxy Tab will likely pick up.
