YouTube is unbeatably the most popular video site around the globe. And with very good reason: it listens to its fans.

The upload limit on the video length on YouTube has been raised to 15 minutes from the earlier 10. According to the site, an increase in the allowed duration was the most requested feature among YouTube users. Good news for those who had never had enough of prancing around with their enlightening, home-made videos in the famous video site. Though, a five-minute hike would hardly help users who currently have to split their movie into pieces, and will have to continue doing so.

Google is probably happier than any YouTube user though. Their announcement proudly declares, “We encourage you to take full advantage of this new time limit by making a video of your ‘15 minutes of fame’. Imagine that this video is all the world will ever know about you: what would you want to communicate?”

“What will be the enduring stamp you’ve left on us all? Tag your video with ‘yt15minutes,’ upload it by Wednesday, August 4, and we’ll select a handful of people to truly gain their 15 minutes of fame by featuring them on the YouTube homepage in a future spotlight.”

We think we’ll pass this one. It is just a bit of an enigma why the Google subsidiary took so long to come around to this long-anticipated decision. Reportedly, YouTube wasn’t too sure that their preparation was enough to withstand the onslaught of contents of longer duration. Good thing they managed to give the necessary finishing touches to their copyright-protection tools when they did.
