It is tablet PC-time everywhere else. So how could a nation which spans two continents and boasts of nine time-zones be left behind? Russian company, Rover Computers has shot a big bolt from the blue and served us with a new RoverPad. Wait, did I say “a new”? I actually meant “five”.
Varying from 5-inch to 7-inch screen sizes, all the models (except for the one sitting cozy on Windows CE) run on Google’s Android OS. Variety is also seen with processors borrowed from Samsung, Marvell and RockChip ARM CPU, along with NVIDIA’s Tegra in one of the models.
The RoverPad TegA W70- the one powered by Tegra- is the inspired one with a 4GB flash drive, Android 2.1, a HDMI output, WiFi and 512MB of RAM. It has an interesting 7-inch capacitive touchscreen and an integrated webcam. However, on close inspection, it doesn’t look much different from what we have seen of the Compal Tegra tablet promoted by NVIDIA. The other four also show quite a few similarities to random reference designs, but conspicuously with the logo of Rover Computers.
Another compelling model is the Air G70, which struts around with a 7-inch WVGA resistive touchscreen, a 667MHz ARM11 CPU, 256 MB of RAM, a 4GB internal flash drive, WiFi, optional 3G and a microSD expansion slot. This is the one we earlier mentioned as a Windows CE lover.
Touted to be the most affordable one in the new family, the RoverPad 3WG70 hardly makes money an issue with 128MB of RAM, 2GB of flash storage, a microSD card slot, WiFi, webcam and USB. Running on Android 1.5, this model is expected to be available for less than $321 (10,000 rubles).
The most petite of the lot is undeniably the RoverPad Go G50, with a tiny 5-inch touchscreen, and measuring in at 158 x 88 x 16mm. Its specifications defy its size, with a Marvell PXA303 CPU, 128MB of RAM and 2GB of storage. It runs on Android 1.5 and has WiFi, GPS, 3G, a microSD card slot and USB connectivity. The 7-inch version of Go G50, the RoverPad Go G72 deflects slightly with Android 1.6, Bluetooth, Ethernet, optional GPS and a webcam.
We are yet to receive word on the pricing of the different models, but rumours have it that the whole fleet will be on the shelves by October this year.
