The 3D thing is getting bigger and bigger. And like in every new technology, Sony is anything but getting left behind. But this time around, it is doling out the good stuff in small pieces.
Only in June had Sony released the 3D Firmware Update 3.30 for every PlayStation that was connected online. Now the Japanese corporation has declared various new developments, in stages. The first among these, of course, will be an update meant for PlayStation 3 to enable Blu-ray 3D movie playback. This one is slated for a September release. It is about time, I would say, considering that football fans are already getting treated with 3D World Cup matches on ESPN.
All this information was procured from a presentation by Sony Europe’s Mick Holding, who couldn’t stop raving about what 3D does to the world, and how Sony is playing a big role in it. An excerpt from the presentation states: “We think games are going to be the killer content for 3D. In general, we find that 3D enhances all types of games. There are no types that it doesn’t bring a benefit to.”
Following the September update, Holding revealed that there would also be an update for 3D photos and home movies. Firmware upgrades are in the planning for accessing .mpo files (photographs preferably shot from your new 3D panorama-enabled Cybershot, I presume), YouTube videos or any PlayTV broadcast.
Seriously though, it all goes to Sony’s credit to keep one device as old as the PS3 alive and kicking. The PlayStation is the oldest Blu-ray player that boasts of 3D capability, and it is only getting better. Wii and Xbox 360, maybe it is time for you to wake up!
