At the E3 this year, Nintendo revealed the new and exciting 3DS with a warning. The picture they then released could be a far cry from what would eventually be released. We guess the trick was just to keep the curiosity alive.
According to an interview between Nintendo 3DS platform producer, Hideo Konno and Wired, the case is otherwise. Ironically, the little tête-à-tête had taken place during E3, but has only been published recently. According to Konno, Nintendo 3DS had been showcased in its finalized avatar at the event. Nintendo does not plan to implement any changes before placing it on the shelves next year, as scheduled. In his own words, Konno told the interviewer, “You can take this as the final shape.”
This directly contradicts earlier claims by Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo’s North American President and Chief Operating Officer, who told us to expect a few changes to the 3DS from the one shown at the E3, by the time we get our hands on it. The first in the DS series went through quite a makeover after it was unveiled at E3 in 2004. We suppose no one had reason to doubt Fills-Aime this time around.
In the interview published by Wired, Konno goes on to divulge details about the screen tech workings, future expansion plans and a little information on the controls. He compared the screen’s technique to an old-school lenticular sticker. He says, “If we simply prepare a picture for your left eye and a picture for the right eye, and the eyes each see a separate picture, it looks 3D.”
Konno also implied to further plans of a larger 3D screen. One of the key points of stress for the model was compactness and portability. The Nintendo 3DS Tag Mode will also store game data on the handheld gadget to minimize need to cartridge-sharing. Konno remained a bit taciturn on the 3DS store issue though: “I can’t talk about specifics…but like WiiWare and DSiWare there should be downloadable content for this platform.”
We hope all the air get cleared soon as we can feast ourselves when the Nintendo 3DS finally gets on the shelves.
