On Wednesday and Friday, the unidentified attackers had tried to sneak in to different South Korean government websites. At both the times, timely alarm was raised and attacks were restricted.

In a statement later, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security said that government was investigating both the cases. However, the statement said most of the attacking computers were traced to China.

On Wednesday’s attack, some China-based computers targeted security ministry’s site and computers.

Repeating similar cyber attack, a large numbers of computers on Friday had tried to gain access to a site run and maintained by the Korean Culture and Information Service and the Justice Ministry. Those ‘denial of service attacks’ could damage the servers, if timely action was not undertaken, said a cyber expert.

According to South Korean media, North Korea has an active Internet warfare unit that works tirelessly towards destabilizing cyber services of the country. The media also allege that the South Korean military IT networks are highly vulnerable to North Korean hacking efforts. In the recent past, the U.S. had also experienced similar cyber attacks originated from this area, claims the report.

Last year, in a successful cyber attack, government cyber services of South Korea were paralyzed. The attacks, according to the South Korean officials – as they believe, were originated from North Korea.

The two neighboring Korean countries are still living in a hostile environment even after ending their formal war in 1953. Significantly, the three-year Korean War was ended with a cease-fire, and not following a peace treaty.

Reacting to the Friday’s attack, the security ministry had timely blocked 274 computers, mostly from China, using IP addresses preventing them from gaining access to government websites and thus a heavy damage to data loss was averted.
