Search giant, Google is all set to phase out the use of Windows. Employees will have access to Mac OS and Linux alone as desktop operating system options. New hires can choose between Apple’s Mac OS X or Linux systems. Few are allowed to install Windows on their notebooks but those wanting to retain Windows on their system need to obtain clearance from senior levels. It is believed that Google started began moving its internal users from Windows in the month of January itself.
The Financial Times reported that Google is all set to pull the plug from Windows due to security concerns.
The move follows a hack attack against Google’s China operation earlier this year. A flaw in the IE 6 is believed to be a reason for the hack in China too. With the hack attack and consequent shut down of China Ops, security issues have gained more importance. It appears that the impending launch of Google’s Chrome OS could be a reason for Google to dump Windows too as Chrome is set to compete with Windows 7. However, there is no doubt that the popularity of Windows makes it prone to hackers and spyware authors.
Google has refused to comment on its policies but employees were quoted saying that the uproar at Google over the phase-out of Windows has been far less than it might have been if the company dumped Apple products. It is no surprise that Google would want its employees to use its products, even the Google Chrome. ”
We’re always working to improve the efficiency of our business, but we don’t comment on specific operational matters,” said a Google spokesperson via e-mail.
For now, it appears to be a semi-official policy and a sure-sign of worse things for Microsoft. Is this a move for security reasons or one to shift the spotlight to Chrome?
