Skype Mobile with Video Calling On Android Handsets by End of This Year
Skype is ready to set the bar on mobile video calling, with an announcement that it will bring in direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This particular application will be available to global consumers, irrespective of the carriers, just as the present day iPhone application. So far, Skype on Android (and Blackberry) was available only for Verizon customers. However, owners of either device could seek Skype functionality only through third-party services like Fring or Nimbuzz.
Skype has helped move video calls to living rooms with its tie-ups with Panasonic, Samsung & LG, apart from the large number of calls placed on the computer. With this, it is set to proliferate into mobile phone devices too. The release of the video app will signify direct competition to Qik, which has struck deals to offer services on latest Android smartphones, especially the HTC Evo. The handset has a front-facing video camera, which makes it an ideal option for Skype video chat.
It appears that Skype’s ambitions are finally set to extend past one carrier. What remains to be seen is the functionality which the Skype Android app will have!
