The latest launch from Google and Open Handset Alliance –Android 2.0 is a mobile Operating System running on Linux kernel. The DROID (Motorola’s comeback phone) will be the first phone to feature Android 2.0
Android 2.0 is already considered as a threat to the present craze iPhone. The exciting new features of Android 2.0 includes:
➢ EMAIL made more user friendly
• A new API allows Email and contact to be synchronized to a device easily to multiple accounts from additional data sources.
• Just by tapping on the contact photo, we can call, text or email that person.
• In order to browse multiple accounts, there is Combined Inbox.
• It provides Microsoft Exchange support. It’s totally up to the handset manufacturer to include this feature or not.
➢ Advanced Camera
• Android 2.0 has added several attractive camera improvements such as built-in flash support, digital zoom, scene mode, white balance, color effect and macro focus.
➢ Improved Virtual Keyboard
• Android’s improved virtual keyboard provides better word completion and provides correct character hit thus increasing the speed of two fingered typing.
• Three-point mutitouch support ensures that no key press is missed while typing.
• It also boasts of smarter Dictionary which learns new words that you use very often, and this even includes the contact names. So next time you start typing a word, the word suggestion will also include contact names.
➢ Browser boasts of new features
• It features web browser with an actionable URL bar which allows the user to use the URL bar for searching.
• It bookmarks using thumbnail images and also features double-tap zoom in/out function.
• It even plays HTML 5 videos in fullscreen mode and includes Geolocation API inorder to locate the device and provides offline applications with Application cache support.
➢ Technology- Bluetooth 2.1
• Bluetooth 2.1 with two new profiles –Object Push Profile (OPP) and Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) provides support to latest Android platform. It is the OPP which enables multiplayer gaming, sending and receiving files and other peer-to-peer applications. While PBAP enables in-car technology which allows the driver to view contact name for an incoming call or make a call direct from dashboard.
➢ GPS Navigation System
• Google Map navigation provides 3-D views, voice guidance and automatic re-routing .This sat-navigation software is absolutely free.
➢ Enhanced Calendar
• It has an enhanced agenda application which allows to invite people to events and show who all are attending the event or not.
• It has search functionality for SMS and also automatically erases old text messages when it reaches its fixed limit.
➢ Graphics Performance
• Hardware acceleration provides enhanced graphics performance.
And to add more to this, Sony has announced that Xperia X10 will soon be upgraded to Android 2.0 and so will HTC Hero.
