Virtual Private Networks could be defined as secured, encrypted private connections made between two computers or networks using a public network like the internet. VPN would be one of the best options to work from remote locations connecting to ones office server. There are mostly two categories of VPN
•    User to Network: Used for a user to connect to a secured network like a corporate intranet via VPN.
•    Network to Network: This connects two networks using the VPN. This virtually merges the two connections into one and thus works as an alternative to establishing a WAN.
In a VPN the process of tunneling is used for communication. It is the process of encapsulating, encrypting, packet forwarding and masking of private IP addresses thus basically encapsulating packets within other packets to protect their privacy and integrity. The Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol and the IPSec Protocol are used to establish the VPN. The PPTP and L2TP protocols are amongst the most likely proposals to be termed as the new standard for Internet Engineering Task Force.

Client
To connect to a VPN first check if the internet connectivity is ok. After verifying this go to control panel and open the Network Connections icon.
Click on the new connection wizard

Once in the new network connection press next and then choose the option to connect to the network at my workplace.
Click next and choose the Virtual Private Network connection
Click next and fill the description as applicable. This could be reset or changed later.
Select Do not dial initial connection in the next screen.
Click next and fill in the description of the hostname or the ip address you wish to see in the network connections area. Even this could be changed later.
The next screen allows you to choose if the VPN network need to be available only for you or for anyone who uses the system.
This would be the finish button and it offers you options if you need the icon in the desktop and so on. Any extra screens that come up might be because of some trouble with the network connectivity. You may check your internet connectivity in that case. We have the VPN setup at the client side.

Host
To setup the VPN connection at the Host  start with the Create a new connection similar to the setup at the host side.
Choose to Setup an Advance Connection in the new connection setup wizard. Click next.
Select Accept Incoming Connections. Click next.
Select the other devices to accept the incoming connection. Click nest.
Select Allow Virtual Private Connections and click next.
Select the users you would want to grant permission to connect to the VPN and click next.
Choose the protocols and other additional software you would want to help setup the VPN and click next.
We have the VPN setup at the Client side. Now click Finish.
