1. You should turn off the Adobe Flash plug-in, web images, JavaScript and Java Applets from your browser settings as these files are very bulky and will increase the surfing time.

2. Your browser cache size should be increased. If the local cache stores the static parts of a site, your browser will not need to download these files when you again visit the site.

3. The slow DNS server of your ISP can reduce the performance so you should switch to OpenDNS as it will resolve URLs into IP addresses more quickly.

4. Finch can trim down the size of the website by 90% so that the web page loads more faster on a slow web connection.

5. You can use BareSite to check for the latest articles published on your favorite blogs. Baresite can detect the associated feed of a website automatically and will render content quickly inside a minimalist interface.

6. The Google Transcoder service can split large web pages into smaller portions which can be downloaded more quickly to your computer.

7. You should monitor your Internet speed to find out the time in which you are getting the maximum downloading speed from your ISP. By changing your surfing schedule, you can browse more during the “off peak” hours.

8. A text browser like Lynx or Elinks can increase your browsing speed. They download only the HTML version of web pages and thus reduce the overall bandwidth required.

9. You can click the “Cache” link while searching for web pages on Google, for viewing the text version of a web page which is stored in the Google Cache.

10. Change your web activities to offline as far as possible. You will be able to write blogs, send & receive email, and can even read feeds in the offline environment.

Simple email messages can be used to interact with websites like Google Docs, Flickr, Slideshare, etc. Uploading a new document to Google Docs through email will consume only less bandwidth when compared to doing it in the browser. This is because you will be avoiding a trip to the Google Docs website in the first method.

12. Using the same logic, you should also consider using tools like Email The Web or Web In Mail as they will help you browse websites via email. You just need to put the URL of a page in email subject field of and the actual page will be send to you in reply.

13. With the help of Bookmarklets you can compose a new email message without opening the Gmail Inbox or can translate a paragraph of text without visiting Google Translate. You can add relevant bookmarklets to your browser bar which will reduce the steps required to perform a particular task.

14. The netstat command can be used to determine processes which are secretly connecting to Internet in the background. They can consume your precious bandwidth. You can block them using the system Firewall.

15. URL Snooper can be used to determine nonessential host names which a website is trying to connect when downloading a web page. You can use Adblock Plus to filter out advertising banners present in the web pages.

16. You can use Opera Turbo to reduce the webpage size. The requested web page will be send to your machine in a compressed format. The layout of a web site will not be changed but the lower the image resolution will load the webpage faster on slow Internet.
